Erin Vincent presenting an installation in a storage locker for Holding Patterns

‘Non-places‘ in the wider art economy, storage facilities often go unseen for hidden from the public‘s eye. Yet, they constitute crucial sites, populated with some of the world‘s most precious creations. Pointing at the functions associated with these ‘lockers‘, Holding Patterns unravels as an exhibition aimed at re-purposing the respective spaces. The exhibition by this unfolds as an examination of their semantics, projected against the marginalisation of these loci. In a wider context, storage lockers furthermore act as places where personal items find temporary shelter. As outsourced realities of space, they are marked by a certain site-lessness, for keeping the remains of the no-longer-needed. On these grounds, storage facilities testify to patterns of materialism and consumption while emerging as a metaphor for memory and forgetting. The notion of self-storage, of preserving material souvenirs assumes a concrete form within their bounded sphere.

Through her installation, Erin Vincent spins a further commentary that interweaves with the curatorial concept. Occupying the storage space as folds of material planes, Overlay No. 2 speaks to a wrapping of belongings, the things that pertain and that are yet marked by an impossible fleetingness.
