Metamorphosis: Chinese Imagination and Transformation unravels as a timely meditation on the formal language of Chinese calligraphy and painting reflected in Western art of recent times. Held at the China Institute of America, the show brings together twenty-eight voices of Chinese descent whose interpretations of the classical aesthetics find their continuation in a modern canon. Materials and themes gleaned from both realities condense in compositions of great visual allure, thus highlighting how the Chinese art of our time has gained range and eloquence. Among the notable pieces can be found Zheng Chongbin‘s Skylines (2014) where marks of grey colour blend and blur to create a layered amalgam of tan paper. Those accustomed to Occidental image traditions will experience the exhibition as a delightful dive into the culture(s) of art-making.
